They know Dean can’t live without Sam, not only because he’ll go out of his way trying to bring his brother back, but because he’ll spend a lifetime tracking the culprits down. That’s why Walt’s line is so significant. “You wanna spend the rest of your life knowing Dean Winchester’s on your ass?” Not just a week, a month or a year. He knows that leaving Dean alive would lead him to a lifetime on the run, and if that isn’t a perfect representation of Dean’s loyalty and co-dependence on his brother, I don’t know what is.
